I have taken my first steps towards making enough money to travel in 3 months. In fact, I may have already landed my first job as a freelance social media marketer. I must admit though that this was largely due to my cousin needing one and me fitting the requirements. Unfortunately, this would not be enough and I need to get another freelance job in this space in order to have enough money to go travelling. Accordingly, I have spent the past day feverishly writing an e-book on social media marketing in order to showcase my knowledge on the subject. This venture has the added advantage of allowing me to better understand social media marketing as well as fix any lacunae I have in my knowledge. So far, I have written and re-written the introduction, written a brief skeleton of the first chapter (which needs to be fleshed out and definitely re-written) and created a basic outline of the book and all that needs to go in. So far, so good. Any volunteers on taking a shot at editing/reviewing/critiquing the book once I am reasonably satisfied with it?
I have actually been toying with this idea for a while now but have always found an excuse to not do it. Yesterday, something clicked in my head and I stopped thinking and started writing. I still don’t know what changed but I am glad it did. While I am not particularly happy with what I have done so far, I am happy that I have done something as opposed to merely thinking about it. I am and have always been a procrastinator and find it very easy to put off things. I work best on last-minute deadlines. In a way, I feel that I am on a deadline- I have to do this quickly in order to have enough money to go travelling in 3 months and I know that the only way to do it is to get going and stop thinking. The idea of travelling has given me all the impetus I need to make things happen.
Additionally, I have also decided to sell off a lot of my stuff (and I have a lot of it!). When I had first started out this blog, I had expressed a desire to go minimalist but had also realised that I am not ready to part with all my pretty things. While I am still not ready to come down to ‘enough things to fit into a suitcase’, I have noticed that every time I look at my cupboard, I want to throw up because it has so much stuff in it- I have 2 huge drawers just full of shoes, at least 15 handbags and an unnecessary number of clothes (even though I have already discarded about half of my wardrobe). Worse, a lot of this stuff has either not been used or been barely used. A lot of this stuff needs to go. So, I am currently looking for places to sell this stuff. I was thinking E-bay but I realise that that might just be a slow process. Ideally, I would love to throw a garage sale but these things don’t seem to happen in India. Any ideas on how I can sell off a lot of superfluous stuff? I even thought of a Minimalist Party or something where friends could come over and buy stuff they like (and enjoy some booze as well- might help loosen up the purse strings a little bit!) but that might be a little difficult to pull off.
The other idea I have is to start a website dedicated to my travelling plans and asking people to either buy stuff, donate money/ relevant things like travel books/maps etc. or just give plain and simple advice, guidance and encouragement. I am not too comfortable with the idea of asking for money (at least for now) because I would like to provide value in exchange for the money and I do not (as of now) know how to do that.
Any thoughts, ideas, words of encouragement etc.?
